UPDATED: Biased Reporting By Carlos Nogueras Ramos Raises Questions About Journalistic Integrity At Texas Tribune

Updated below. Ramos Still stonewalling Big Bend Times Dot Org. When known liar and provocateur David Flash was able to create a disturbance long enough to warrant a response from law enforcement, the community in Jeff Davis County knew Flash would take every advantage he could. With an assist of a limited release of the body cam video by The Sentinel, and several news outlets willing to play ball, Flash created the narrative that he is nothing more that a persecuted journalist and not a troubled man always on the lookout for his next victims.

Naturally no county officials will make comments to the press with the brave exception of Judge Curtis Evans telling it like it is. Biased journalists like Carlos Nogueras Ramos at The Texas Tribune jumped on to sensationalize the story for their own advantage. Using the excuse that they did not get a response from county officials, Ramos let’s Flash completely control the narrative. Ramos claims to be a reporter covering the Permian Basin and based in Odessa. It seems very strange that someone like Ramos would not have one single contact anywhere in Jeff Davis County that could have clued him in on the truth.

Ramos acts as David Flash’s crazed stenographer throughout the article. Early on Ramos states “The independent publisher of the Big Bend Times regularly attends these meetings, documenting and recording live footage for the website and social media, where he has amassed 285,000 followers on Facebook.” Flash rarely attends these meetings, and when he does, he spends his time walking around and taking photos at very close range. If one looks at his videos of these meetings, there is almost no focus on what is transpiring. He just takes tons of photos that he hopes will bring in money on the internet.

Shortly after Ramos makes this insane statement that completely changes the facts of the incident so that it looks much better for Flash:

“At the June 27 meeting, the conflict escalated when sheriff deputy Adriana Ruiloba grabbed, handcuffed and forcibly removed Flash from the room after he tried to take her photo.

“Stop,” Ruiloba tells him.

“I’m not resisting,” he responds.

This is a strange way of describing what happened. Flash had already interupted the meeting several times, approaching the Sheriff to demand he step outside to pose for photos. After this went on for a very long time, Flash walked between a row of chairs to turn and take pictures of people at the back of the room. This had nothing to do with documenting what was happening at the meeting. The chief approaches him to escort him out, Flash runs backward away from her, she grabs him and moves him towards the exit, he quickly turns towards her and she takes him down. It’s very clear in the video, but Ramos describes this as ” forcibly removed Flash from the room after he tried to take her photo.”

Another bold false statement that Carlos Nogueras Ramos at The Texas Tribune made in the story comes here “The video footage showed Flash attempting to leave the meeting when the Ruiloba, the deputy, confronted him again, telling him to “back off,” adding, “don’t come in my personal space.” This is another lie that Flash began telling almost immediately after his outburst in the courtroom. Flash had placed a cellphone on a selfie stick tripod and it was right next to the Chief. Flash walked right up to the Chief from behind and reached around her to get the camera. He was not walking out the door. She told him no to come into her personal space. Flash was reaching with his hand right next to her firearm. It’s clear in the body cam video. Carlos Nogueras Ramos and The Texas Tribune own the citizens of Jeff Davis County an apology. We still have not received a response from Ramos at the time this article was published but look forward to updating this story with their explanation.

Update: Of course, the real tell in the text that Carlos “wrote” is the little factoid that Marfa is 55 miles south of Fort Davis. It’s about 21 miles. We wanted to write another story about the lazy journalism by Carlos Ramos and cover all of the mistakes in detail, if they were mistakes. But when you see the 55 miles nugget, it’s clear what happened here. Carlos likely used AI to generate this story. Who knows if Carlos actually exists at all. He may be another Holly Pearson type scam. We emailed him twice about his story and didn’t get a response. Only AI would add a number that is totally wrong like that. There’s no way Carlos would have come up with that incorrect number on his own. His bio claims he lived in Odessa but he seems to have little knowledge of West Texas, if he even exists.

Readers are encouraged to email Carlos and ask for a retraction of his biased story. carlos.nogueras@texastribune.org
